Even when you don't know your identity, God will still speak you to you

Finding Identity in the Midst of Conflict: Lessons from the Call of Moses

Have you ever felt completely conflicted about who you are? In a world that constantly tells us who we should be, it’s easy to lose sight of our true identity.

Recently, I’ve been reflecting deeply on the story of Moses, and something from his initial call struck me as incredibly profound. Moses was a man completely torn apart by his own history. If anyone understood what it meant to have an identity crisis, it was him.

A Man Torn Between Worlds

Think about Moses' upbringing. He was born a Hebrew, a member of a nation of slaves. Yet, through a dramatic turn of events, he wound up in Pharaoh’s court—raised by the daughter of the very man who was actively trying to murder his brothers and sisters.

Talk about a conflicted life. He belonged to two entirely different worlds, yet truly fit into neither.

Later, when he tried to defend his people, it ended in tragedy. He killed an Egyptian taskmaster and was forced to flee the country for his life. He ended up in a neighboring nomadic tribe, married a daughter of that tribe, and spent years working as a simple shepherd.

By the time God approached him, Moses was a mosaic of fragmented identities:

  • A Hebrew by birth

  • An Egyptian prince by upbringing

  • A fugitive by circumstance

  • A Midianite shepherd by choice

When God Speaks to Your True Self

When God finally calls out to Moses from the burning bush, He doesn't address the fugitive, the prince, or the shepherd. Instead, God speaks directly to Moses' root identity.

"I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob."

God essentially told him, "I know exactly who you are, Moses. Your past, your confusion, and your fractures do not define you. Your lineage and your connection to Me do." God met a deeply conflicted man and grounded him in an unshakeable truth.

He is Speaking to You, Too

Moses' story isn't just ancient history; it’s a mirror for our own lives. You might feel defined by your mistakes, your fractured family history, or the conflicting roles you have to play every day.

But just as God spoke to Moses to cut through the noise of his identity crisis, He wants to do the same for you. God knows your true name. He knows your true worth. Even when you are at your most conflicted, He is actively speaking to your identity.

Are you listening?

This post was inspired by my ongoing walk with the Lord. Keep seeking, keep listening, and remember who you belong to.
